John of State
whose cloak snaked around his body
the contours of which you had to guess;
and,
Allan of Intelligence
his dagger secreted behind his back
waiting to strike
enemies of the state.
The brothers Dulles
John with his cloak
and
Allan with his dagger
decided to overthrow
Arbenz, President of Guatemala
for giving
The United Fruit Company’s
unused land
to the campesinos.
The brothers Dulles
John and Allen,
major stock owners in
The United Fruit Company,
could not abide
the democratically elected
President of Guatemala,
so, rumors of communism
propagated by the press,
a quiet barrage of bladed ink,
courtesy of the brothers Dulles.
The brothers Dulles
John of State and
Allan of Intelligence
plotted with Guatemala’s military
to overthrow the “communist” Arbenz
and protect United Fruit Company’s bottom
line and their own.
The wealthy brothers Dulles
Killed democracy
To save it.

About the Author

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Greg Carey grew up in a small New Jersey town.
After graduating high school, he attended Villanova University, earning a BA in History.
Tiring of east coast winters, he fled the Atlantic states for sunny California, and the University of Santa Clara, where he earned a MA in Modern Chinese History.
Enjoying graduate student life—perhaps a bit too much—he then enrolled at the University of California, Davis to study Modern Russian History. He completed all course work and tests, but left the program before writing his dissertation. Instead, he picked up a teaching credential and began his teaching career at an independent, private school in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
He currently teaches American Studies and Philosophy of Mindfulness. Next year, he will also teach Hidden History, which will examine American foreign policy from an anti-imperialist perspective. He is married and has a son.
