Over the weekend, federal agents arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a permanent legal resident of the United States, and said they were stripping him of his permanent resident status and going to deport him back to Palestine. During the student encampments and protests at Columbia University last year, Khalil was a public figure involved in negotiating with the University’s administration on behalf of Columbia University Apartheid Divest.
Though the Trump administration is promising more arrests and deportations of those in the Palestine solidarity movement and beyond, the move has been met with action and resistance inside the courts and in the streets. A federal judge has temporarily halted the deportation, and over two and a half million people have signed a petition demanding Khalil’s immediate release. Protests, rallies, teach-ins and walk-outs are scheduled to happen all week.

The strong-arm of the unconstitutional law is being applied because they know that the usual propaganda that paints Israel as the eternal victim is not succeeding anymore when the IDF has been proved to shoot babies and children in the head at close range, just like ISIS terrorists do. American youth now support Palestine by over 60%. Suppressing dissent won’t work and the Trump administration will lose the support of all but the most fanatical Christian and Jewish zionists. Not in my Name staged a protest Thursday in Trump Tower and many were arrested. The Forward printed an excellent article warning of a return to McCarthyism.
Mahmoud Kahlill has the right to Freedom of Speech, but why are those who have passionately defended Khalil been so conspicuously silent on the matter of the 59 hostages who have been held in Hamas terror tunnels for over 520 days, five of whom are US citizens. To those calling for Khalil’s return: Where is your outrage over the unlawful detainment of Edan Alexander, Itay Chen, Omer Neutra, Gadi Haggai and Judi Weinstein Haggai?
Shouldn’t your comment be addressed to Benjamin Netanyahu, who violated the terms of the ceasefire by halting all aid deliveries into Gaza and cutting off their electricity? By starving the Palestinians ( a war crime) and depriving them of desalinated water, he is also making the hostages suffer the same fate. Let him allow the trucks to start moving again and Hamas will release more hostages.
