Alicia Castro and Martin Stolar

Alicia Castro, currently Argentina’s ambassador to the Russian Federation, first met Julian Assange in London, in 2012, when she was Argentina’s ambassador to the United Kingdom. She visited him many times during his long confinement in London’s Ecuadoran embassy and has been among his most active  public supporters.

Marty Stolar is a legendary civil rights and criminal defense attorney whom the Indypendent dubbed “the lawyer who carries protests into the courtroom.”

For over half a century he has defended activists and dissidents ranging from the Black Panthers to Black Lives Matter, from Catholic anti-war radicals to gas pipeline protestors. He was also attorney for Randy Credico during his appearance before the Mueller Commission and in the trial of Roger Stone. In this episode of “Countdown to Freedom,” Stolar spotlights significant aspects of Chelsea Manning’s continuing persecution by the U.S. Government that are not being covered by the media. Although Manning was recently released from jail, she still faces over $250,000 in fines for contempt of court after refusing to give evidence to a grand jury.

Part Two: Tariq Ali

Tariq Ali is a British political activist, writer, journalist, historian, filmmaker, and public intellectual. He is a member of the Editorial Committee of the New Left Review and Sin Permiso and contributes to many publications including The Guardian, The Nation, CounterPunch, and the London Review of Books. A frequent visitor to Assange during his 7-year exile in London’s Ecuadoran embassy, Ali’s many passionate speeches and articles in support of Assange have rallied public opinion throughout the world. His most recent book is In Defense of Julian Assange, co-edited with Margaret Kunstler.
